Inrush, capacitor charging

In a standard DC power supply circuit a filter capacitor is used after the rectifier to reduce the ripple in the DC power. When the power supply is first switched on, the capacitor needs to charge and will initially draw a higher level of current to charge.This high current could destroy the diodes in the rectifier. To prevent this damage a specially designed power resistor can be placed in series with the diodes to protect them from the current surge. An optimally designed surge resistor will minimize the size and maximize the surge absorption capability. It can also help ensuring that the power supply can be made as small as possible. Based on our experience with some of our customers we have seen that the original non optimized resistors can be replaced by optimized resistors that could be half the original size.
